HEMATOLOGICAL AND CLINICAL EVALUATION OF LEUKEMIAS, USING CYTOCHEMICAL STAINS AND IMMUNOPHENOTYPING

Background: Leukemias are abnormal proliferation of hematopoietic cells, causing progressive infiltration the marrow. It is eleventh most common cancer in world, and increasingly found now developing countries. Two widely used classifications now, FAB, WHO classification, which has got supplanted with increasing knowledge on cytomorphology cytogenetics. This study, attempts to evaluate role cytochemistry as a cost-effective tool, various types leukemias, immunophenotyping select few cases. Aim:- The main aim was assess type, subtype leukemia, using cytochemistry, find their concordance cases, cost effective tool diagnosing it. Methods: 56 cases were identified by morphology Sudan black B, PAS stains. Immunophenotyping, done 6 selectively, rate determined. Results:- Out 36 acute, rest 20, chronic AML, accounted for 43% CML at 33%, ALL 22%. Anemia seen, more acute especially ALL, followed AML. Total count values seen high CML, Platelet counts, less ALL,followed lowest Splenomegaly, commonest feature 21 4 concordant, showing 67% rate. Conclusion :- In setting where there lack facilities flow cytometry, countries, combined still serves best means leukemia
